Gooseneck barnacles are in the phylum Arthropoda, and are related to crabs and shrimp. Their exoskeleton consists of a series of interlocking plates, and they attach to the substrate with a stalk that varies in length. They feed using their legs called cirri, that rasp through the water, picking up planktonic organisms and scooping them into their mouths. The beautiful orange colour that is captured in our unique fine art t-shirt, comes from the presence of haemoglobin in their blood, which is more visible in those populations that live subtidally. Did we mention their legs are also their lungs? What a world.
